Until now, students without a high school diploma (or its recognized equivalent, including secondary/home school education), as well as students who did not complete a secondary school education, were not eligible for financial aid. However, a recent change to the Higher Education Act of 1965 has partially restored the “ability to benefit alternatives,” or “ATB.” This means that students who did not previously have these degrees are now eligible for Title IV financial aid, as long as it’s from an eligible career pathways program. The New York Automotive and Diesel Institute (NYADI) is proud to be eligible of career pathways program. We offer our ATB students the following to meet or exceed the standards set by the Department of Education:
- Concurrently enroll students in connected adult education and eligible postsecondary programs;
- Provide students with counseling and supportive services to identify and attain academic and career goals;
- Provide structured course sequences that—
- Are articulated and contextualized; and
- Allow students to advance to higher levels of education and employment;
- Provide opportunities for acceleration for students to attain recognized postsecondary credentials, including degrees, industry relevant certifications, and certificates of completion of apprenticeship programs…”
Since we started the ATB program in March of 2015, more than 120 students have benefited by preparing themselves for a career as automotive mechanics and technicians while, at the same time and at no extra charge, receiving instruction towards attaining their High School Equivalency (HSE) diplomas.
Our Test Assessment Secondary Completion (TASC) team, led by the Director of Academic Assessment Joseph Santora, provides individualized education in English, ESL, Math, Science, and Social Studies to prepare them for the High School Equivalency exam. We are proud of the time and hard work that our students are putting in to complete two educational programs at the same time.
Whether a student chooses auto body repair, automotive technician, or diesel mechanic, NYADI is the place to be. Our dedicated team of instructors, managers, and support staff are working together to ensure the career success of all of our outstanding students.
HSC AND TASC:
NYADI offers our ATB students preparation for the TASC (TEST ASSESSING SECONDARY COMPLETION) at no additional cost so that they may attain a High School Equivalency (HSE) Certificate along with their NYADI certificates. This program is offered in a state of the art electronic environment with qualified instructors and peer tutors. To ensure that applicants are prepared to accomplish the tasks required to pass NYADI classes and in order to be accepted as an ATB student, applicants must take qualifying exams in verbal and math skills. Applicants who do not meet the minimum scores will be referred to further preparation and can come back at a later date to test again.
