The Role of a Motor Vehicle Inspector

Further, an inspector must thoroughly examine a vehicle to make sure that parts like its brakes, lights, seat belts, and turn signals are working properly. To become a DMV-certified motor vehicle inspector in NYS, applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:
- Have completed one year of coursework towards an associate degree in automotive technology, or
- Hold a high school or vocational school diploma in vocational automotive trades, or
- Have at least one year of experience in repairing motor vehicles
Additionally, applicants must have the following qualifications:
- Be 17 years of age or older
- Complete a certification application provided by the DMV
- Hold an NYS driver license, learner permit, or non-driver photo ID card with a valid NYS DMV Client ID number
- Complete the inspector certification training program and pass a state examination
