The Ability to Benefit Program
NYADI The College of Transportation Technology is an Ability to Benefit (ATB) Technical College, and students from all backgrounds can apply. Here, you can enroll in one of our career training programs and in our adult education program at the same time – and at no extra cost to you.
At NYADI, over 100 applicants have prepared in and passed the ATB program, and more than 120 students have received their GED or TASC diploma. We pride ourselves on providing this free training to students with no high school diploma, enabling them to complete a general educational degree (GED) that could put them on the road to an associate’s degree. They could even potentially land a position with BMW, Mercedes Benz, and other big-name manufacturers.
At NYADI in Jamaica, NY, we are committed to helping you achieve your career goals. Our Financial Aid counselors will help you apply for any financial aid as long as you are eligible. They guide you to creating a tuition and financial aid planning strategy specific to each student.
Ability to Benefit Program
The Higher Education Act of 1965 amendment allows students without a High School Diploma or equivalent to qualify for Title IV financial aid. This aid is only possible at participating schools and career pathway programs such as NYADI. It favors students who did not qualify for admissions or who could not normally afford the tuition fees.
Since the Education Act amendment in 2015, over 320 students have qualified to attend classes at NYADI. The students benefit by:
- Concurrent enrollment in our High School Equivalent course and a career certificate program.
- Accessing academic counseling sessions.
- Structured courses that allow them to advance through the automotive hierarchy.
- An option to participate in our industry certificate program.
Test Assessment Secondary Completion (TASC) and High School Equivalency (HSE) Exam
When an ATB student enrolls in one of the certificate programs, they automatically sign up for the TASC High School Prep course. The Test Assessment Secondary Completion started with students who needed to learn and relearn high school materials in mind. It prepares them to take the HSE (High School Equivalency) exam.
The HSE consists of reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. The students get individualized learning from the Director of Academic assessment with help from qualified instructors and peer educators.
This prepares the students to sit for the HSC exam successfully. After passing the HSE, students may take the AOS program to earn their Associate degree. Upon graduation, the students are certified automotive and diesel technicians and will be able to enter the workforce in their chosen fields. NYADI’s department of placement assists graduates and alumni in finding meaningful employment.
HSE AND TASC
As part of the ATB experience, students receive TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) with no extra cost to complete their High School Equivalency (HSE) exam. The program includes classes in reading, mathematics, writing, science, and social studies, ensuring students receive the fully rounded education they need to complete the HSE, before transferring to the AOS program to complete their Associate Degree. With this assistance, our students can enter their field with confidence and qualifications to find employment.
