Students with Learning Differences

Our goal at NYADI is to provide support to all of our students, including those with learning differences. Students that request additional support for their education should register and let the office of student services know about the specific accommodations needed as soon as they enter into the college. We will do our best to address them and have them available to you when needed.

The first step to be completed is the accommodation request form to be submitted to Student Services office along with any supporting documents, such as an IEP, medical diagnosis or letter from a Doctor or Therapist. All documents including medical are considered confidential and will be shared with college officials only on a need-to-know basis.

The following procedures apply to reasonable accommodations and academic adjustment in connection with:

  • A disability
  • Pregnancy, childbirth, or a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth
  • Religious practices
  • Status as a victim of domestic violence, sex offence or stalking

We will work with you to make sure we are accommodating and supporting your individual needs. Once the Office Student Service determines the assistance plan after reviewing your documentation and speaking with you, we will let you and the instructors know in writing, of what accommodations you are permitted to use for your studies.

Students can feel free to contact student services at any point in their studies for assistance.

The NYADI Disability Support Services team collaborates with students with disabilities to ensure access to all programs, services, and facilities at the college.

The staff will support students with disabilities and all NYADI community members will foster an accessible and supportive environment.

Services provided through the accommodation process include, but are not limited to:

  • Testing accommodations (Additional testing time and distraction reduced locations)
  • Note-taking assistance
  • Technology Accommodations in class
  • Readers for exams
  • Special classroom seating
  • American Sign Language Interpreting Services
  • Individualized extra help after class
  • Individualized Writing/research workshops

Some accommodations may require advanced planning. Students seeking an accommodation are encouraged to complete the paperwork noted above prior to the beginning of the academic semester.

The courses in all three programs, Automotive, Diesel and Collision are structured to accommodate student’s different levels of learning. The instructors use differentiation, positive classroom relations and student involvement for positive learning experiences to increase participation, enhance academic and social skills and increase attendance and retention rates.

We use CANVAS as our Learning Management System which incorporates Electude, our e-learning platform that uses interactive resources to create a discovery-based learning environment. It is a comprehensive tool that focuses on different areas of the curriculum for the automotive, diesel and collision training program for each class.   Electude is ADA compliant and follows a gamification model, with the intention of making the digital experience more engaging and motivating for students of all academic abilities. Electude, also allows teachers to track performance, achievement, accuracy and learning time. This information allows them to adjust or modify learning content as needed.

The lab portion of our classes, which are incorporated into the daily schedule each day, use a  hands on, direct teaching approach involving student participation, action and repetition.  Students receive immediate feedback from the professor and have the opportunity to repeat skills until they are competent.  Professors understand the individual needs of each student through the communication with student services.

Our faculty provides extra help hours each day after class, for those students needing additional support. They also conduct in-depth safety education to address students with different experience and leaning abilities.  Faculty is also encouraged to speak to the student services staff to make a referral, if they feel a student would benefit from additional accommodations.
