A Degree in Automotive Technology Can Prepare You for the Future

Automotive technology is always changing, and as a mechanic, you need to be up to date with the latest developments. Mechanics need to know what technology is out there, and what technology is on the rise. At NYADI The College of Transportation Technology in Jamaica, New York, our automotive programs are constantly updated as industry standards change. This helps make sure our students are prepared for the job market. We also teach them the skills they’ll need to continue keeping up with change.

Keeping Up With Automotive Technology

Governments around the world are pushing for greener and cleaner technologies, and that is shaping the future of the automotive industry. There is a push for electric vehicles and a shift toward an electric power train versus a traditional internal combustion engine. With these new power trains come new electronic components and technologies that mechanics should know.

At NYADI, one of the courses we offer our students is AT250 – Hybrid Electric Drive Technology. The course is available to students enrolled in the Automotive Technology Associate Degree program. The course focuses on hybrid and electric drive vehicles, which are the types of vehicles many fleets choose. The topics taught in AT250 include:

  • Basic electricity
  • Hybrid motors
  • Internal combustion engines
  • Transaxles
  • Regenerative brakes
  • Air conditioning
  • Batteries
  • Electric vehicle conversion
  • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles
  • Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicles
  • Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) vehicles
  • Fuel cells
  • Hydrogen
  • Biodiesel
  • Alcohol-based fuels

Students who complete this course will be prepared to fix and repair electric vehicles, which are becoming an increasingly larger share of the automotive market.

Prepare for ASE Certifications

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence issues ASE certifications for mechanics who pass exams covering different automotive topics. An ASE certification proves a mechanic is knowledgeable in specific areas.

Students who complete the Hybrid Electric Drive Technology course will have the core information to prepare for the Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist – ASE certification L3. That certification will cover:

  • Battery systems
  • Internal combustion engines
  • Drive systems
  • Power electronics
  • Hybrid supporting systems

Mechanics who earn this ASE certification show potential employers and customers that they know how to work on hybrid and electric vehicles.
