What ASE Certified Mechanics Can Expect Every 5 Years

As a current or aspiring National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified mechanic, did you know that your credentials are only good for five years? That’s right – every five years, ASE certified mechanics must register for a Recertification Test. When that time comes, it’s important to know exactly what to expect, so you can maintain your certification status. If you’re anticipating an upcoming recertification, NYADI The College of Automotive and Diesel Technology can help you know exactly what to expect.

What costs are associated with recertification?

Every person who registers for ASE Recertification Tests must pay a registration fee of $36. In addition to the registration fee, specific test fees may also apply. However, overall test fees are capped at $123 – no matter how many tests you plan on taking.

It’s been over 5 years. Can I still take Recertification Tests?

Fortunately, ASE allows you to take Recertification Tests even if your certifications have expired. As long as you previously passed the test in your specialty area, you may take Recertification Tests and renew your credentials.

Can I take Recertification Tests before my ASE certifications expire?

Yes, you can. If you have multiple certifications with varying expiration dates, you can choose to take all your Recertification Tests before the five years are up. Just note: if you recertify early, the time remaining on your original certification will not be credited.

How can I prepare for an ASE test?

ASE offers online practice tests to help technicians prepare for their upcoming certification or recertification exam. These tests are available to purchase at any time and help you get a feel for the content and format of official ASE tests. You can also download free ASE study guides that outline the format of the test, offer sample questions and suggest further prep resources. If you’d like additional training information, a variety of third-party resources are available.

What if I fail my Recertification Tests?

If at first you don’t succeed, make it a point to try again. After all, it’s been five years since the last time you took the test, and the automotive industry is always changing. Study more, ask your colleagues for help and try again.
