Why ASE-Certified Mechanics Have a Competitive Edge

If cars get your engine revving, you probably already know a good automotive training program is a key step in gaining experience in the field. At NYADI The College of Transportation Technology, we help our automotive technology program students in the Jamaica, NY, area go above and beyond by preparing them to become ASE-Certified mechanics, which can help students gain an edge over other new graduates.

What Is ASE?

ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence. An ASE certification, offered by the National Institute for Automotive Services Excellence, highlights the achievements of an automotive mechanic and their exceptional knowledge, skills, and training. Some customers use the ASE certification to pick their mechanic, knowing that their mechanic has undergone specific training to make them knowledgeable in their field.

An ASE certification is available only to mechanics and not shops—that means a shop can advertise that they employ ASE-certified mechanics but can’t claim to have the honor themselves.

Benefits of ASE Certification

An ASE certification is awarded to mechanics who:

  • Successfully pass ASE examinations
  • Have a minimum of two years of professional industry experience

Many mechanics who have been ASE certified have had credits they earned in school apply to the certification’s education credits.

An ASE certification can benefit:

  • The technician: The ASE certification provides written proof of the mechanic’s skills that could make them a preferred candidate for an employer and could lead to a higher wage.
  • The employer: Employers see the ASE certification as an assurance of their mechanic’s skills.
  • The customer: A customer can ensure that their vehicle is in the hands of an experienced mechanic.

By earning an ASE certification, you will give yourself an edge over other job seekers and give your employer and customers confidence in your skills.

What Does It Take to Become ASE Certified?

To become an ASE-certified mechanic in automotive and light trucks, you need to pass the test. There are eight different areas a mechanic can become certified in:

  • Engine repair
  • Transmission and transaxle
  • Drivetrain and axels
  • Steering and suspension
  • Braking systems
  • Electronic and electrical
  • Air conditioning and heating
  • Engine performance

If someone with the required work experience completes all eight classes and passes them, they earn the title of ASE Master Technician.

Other ASE certifications besides automobile and light truck include:

  • Collision repair and refinish
  • Damage analysis and estimating
  • Automobile service consultant
  • Truck equipment
  • Alternate fuels
  • Auto maintenance and light repair
  • Transit bus
  • Advanced engine performance specialist
  • Electronic diesel engine diagnosis specialist
  • Light-duty hybrid/electric vehicle specialist
  • ASE military technical wheeled vehicle
  • Parts specialist
  • School bus
  • Medium-heavy truck
  • Undercar specialist exhaust systems

Each certification is issued for five years, and studying for each exam is recommended — the tests are designed to challenge a mechanic’s knowledge. Many students must retake the test one or more times to pass.
