Is an Automotive Career Change Realistic for You?

Starting over can feel risky, especially after years of being away from a classroom. Fortunately, you don’t need shop experience to begin. At NYADI, our instructors start with the fundamentals and offer one-on-one tutoring when you need extra help.

You also may be juggling a job or family commitments. To help, we offer day and evening classes with full-time or part-time enrollment. And, with rolling admissions and multiple start dates, you won’t have to wait months for a new term. Additionally, if you don’t have a high school diploma, our Ability to Benefit program lets you complete career training and adult education at the same time, at no extra cost.

Enrolling in Automotive Technician School: Our Programs

Once you’re confident a career change is possible, the next question is where to focus. Luckily, the transportation industry offers opportunities for people with different skills and interests, which is reflected in our program options.

Automotive Technology

Do you like tracking down the cause of a warning light or want to understand what’s happening under the hood? Our Automotive Technology program is for people interested in vehicle diagnostics, service, and repair, with training on brakes, engine performance, electrical systems, and heating and air conditioning.

Automotive and Diesel Technology

If you’d rather work on bigger machines, our Automotive and Diesel Technology path expands automotive training to cover passenger vehicles along with trucks, diesel engines, and heavy-duty systems. Students prepare for National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Truck certification in areas like heavy-duty chassis and preventive maintenance inspection. We’re the only college in New York City to offer an Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) degree in diesel technology.

Collision Repair Technology

For others, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing a damaged vehicle look new again. Collision Repair students learn to assess damage and use specialized tools to repair and refinish vehicles so that they’re safe to drive.

Automotive Management and Support Technology

Of course, not every transportation career needs to work with cars. Our Automotive Management and Support Technology program is for people drawn to service advising, parts, customer relations, and business support. Our coursework includes:

  • Shop operations
  • Inventory and fleet management
  • Sales skills

It also prepares students for ASE Automobile Service Consultant and Parts Specialist testing.
