What Does It Take to Become ASE Certified?

To become an ASE-certified mechanic in automotive and light trucks, you need to pass the test. There are eight different areas a mechanic can become certified in:

• Engine repair
• Transmission and transaxle
• Drivetrain and axels
• Steering and suspension
• Braking systems
• Electronic and electrical
• Air conditioning and heating
• Engine performance

If someone with the required work experience completes all eight classes and passes them, they earn the title of ASE Master Technician.

Each certification is issued for five years, and studying for each exam is recommended — the tests are designed to challenge a mechanic’s knowledge. Many students must retake the test one or more times to pass.

• Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) in Automotive Technology: A 60-credit program with over 1,400 hours of training.
• Certificate in Automotive Service Technology: A 45-credit program with over 1,000 hours of training.

• Certificate in Collison Repair Technology: Featuring over 1,100 hours of training, this program prepares students for repairing and refinishing automobiles after a collision.

At the end of each program, students will be armed with all the knowledge needed to take an ASE exam.
