Acing Your First Interview for an Auto Tech Position

The job interview process can be intimidating. It’s exciting to display your expertise for a prospective employer, but at the same time, it’s natural to be nervous, because these interviews play a huge role in directing your career path. Fortunately, as long as you hone your skills and take interview preparation seriously, you’ll be well on your way to achieving an exciting position in the automotive field. As you prepare for an upcoming interview, consider these top tips from NYADI The College of Automotive and Diesel Technology.

1. Research the company you’re interviewing with.

This tip applies to nearly every industry, and automotive positions are no exception. Your interviewer understands that you need a job to pay the bills, but they likely want to know why you chose their company over another. Demonstrating that you understand what the business is about and how your skill set answers a need is an easy way to distinguish yourself right off the bat.

2. Be ready to discuss your training and knowledge without embellishing it.

It could seem tempting to make yourself out as an expert in all things automotive, but you’re better off clearly outlining where your strengths lie. That’s because your interviewer may use a portion of the interview to test your knowledge. If you’re unable to back up your claims, you might be out of luck. But don’t be afraid to highlight any special training or certifications you’ve received – these could also give you an edge on the competition, because certified auto mechanics are often in high demand.

3. Prepare to discuss your career goals.

Most employers agree that a forward-thinking employee is an appealing employee. There’s a good chance that the interviewer will ask you questions about your future, such as where you see yourself in five years. Do your best to come up with a potential career plan, and answer these questions accordingly – you can always change your goals as you gain more experience and delve into other areas of the industry. Plus, don’t be afraid to say what you’d like to learn to round out your existing skills.

4. Practice!

The internet is an especially valuable resource when it comes to interview prep. Try to find the time to brush up on interview questions that are common in the industry, which can easily be found with a quick web search. Then, conduct a few practice interviews with a friend or family member. This is an easy way to refine your answers and build confidence.
