The Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) association administers professional certification exams to demonstrate technical aptitude. Though most are geared towards internal combustion vehicles, the ASE L3 focuses on hybrid and electric vehicles. To get this certification, you must first:
- Have 2 years of full-time experience at an automotive shop
- Have the A6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems) certification
- Have the A8 (Engine Performance) certification
Though it may seem like extra work, earning your L3 is worth it. The certification marks you as a technician committed to learning the ins and outs of electric vehicles. When employers decide which prospect to hire or when customers decide where to bring their business, you will stand out.
Find the Right Workplace
When looking for job placement, prioritize shops that service electric vehicles or are preparing to do so. These shops will be more secure as the industry changes – and likely more lucrative, especially as their return clientele begins trading old internal combustion cars for shiny new EVs.
