What Is a Mobile Diesel Mechanic?

The duties and responsibilities of a mobile diesel mechanic are very similar to those of a regular diesel mechanic. Both roles involve performing sound and reliable services on machinery that utilizes diesel technology, such as medium- and heavy-duty trucks, buses, and construction equipment.

The difference between the two roles is mobile diesel mechanics go directly to the customer. They travel with their repair equipment and perform maintenance, repair, and diagnostic services wherever the client is broken down. The services of a mobile diesel mechanic can include engine services, brake service, engine diagnosis, inspections, and cooling system service.  

Typical duties of a mobile diesel mechanic include:

• Perform instructed and scheduled repair, maintenance, and services as needed on various vehicles and equipment
• Professionally communicate with customers on job status and schedules
• Maintain service truck in a professional manner
• Stock and maintain service truck inventory, tool collection, and all necessary paperwork daily
• Adhere to all traffic laws

The role of a mobile diesel mechanic generally provides workers with excellent flexibility. Depending on your employer, your hours of operation may not always include the typical 9-to-5 job schedule. With more control over your hours of operation, you may be able to choose to work nights and/or weekends.

The Path to Becoming a Mobile Diesel Mechanic

Mobile diesel mechanics must possess extensive knowledge of the industry. The Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) in Automotive and Diesel Technology program offered by NYADI The College of Transportation Technology provides students with the tools they need to pursue a variety of professions, including the mobile diesel mechanic. While enrolled, students will gain valuable industry experience and learn the necessary skills of the trade.

Led by dedicated, ASE-certified instructors, the degree program offers 60 credit hours of training and is comprised of both hands-on training and theoretical classroom learning. To ensure every student is provided with the attention they need to learn, the program features a favorable student-to-faculty ratio.

To accommodate the busy lives of our students, the program is offered both full-time and part-time. Students who are enrolled full-time can expect to complete the program in 16 months, and part-time students can expect to be completed in 25 months.

Students who complete the automotive and diesel technology program will be prepared to earn the following Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications:

• Brakes
• Diesel engines
• Electrical/electronic systems
• Gasoline engine performance
• Heavy-duty chassis
• Preventive maintenance inspection
• Steering and suspension

The program also prepares students for several factory certifications from industry-leading automotive manufacturers, including Mack/Volvo, Mack/Volvo, and Isuzu Trucks.
