Automotive Mechanic

The primary function of an automotive mechanic is the inspection, maintenance, diagnostic testing, and mechanical repair of cars and small trucks. An auto mechanic works on motorized components, such as engines, transmissions, drive belts, power steering, and brake systems.

With the rapid advancement of automotive technology, the role of an automotive mechanic has evolved from focusing solely on mechanical components to including various technologies. For example, today’s auto mechanics need knowledge of the advanced electronic technology, such as accident-avoidance systems used in modern vehicles. Additionally, with the popularity of alternative fuels, many mechanics need an understanding of vehicles that operate on hydrogen, electricity, or ethanol.

Auto Body and Collision Repair Technician

An auto body or collision repair technician repairs, refinishes, and replaces vehicle bodies, frames, windshields, and window glass. From minor fender benders to major collisions, an automotive collision repair technician can repair most damage and make a vehicle look and drive like new.

The responsibilities of a collision repair technician include:

  • Reviewing damage reports, preparing estimates, and planning repair work.
  • Removing and replacing damaged body parts.
  • Repairing structural damage and realigning car frames.
  • Hammering out or patching dents and other minor body damage.
  • Grinding, sanding, buffing, priming repaired surfaces, and applying a new finish to the restored body parts.

  • Other light-duty maintenance.

Many tire and lube technicians also take part in the inspection and assessment of vehicles and perform multi-point inspections and diagnose routine problems.

Transmission Specialist

A transmission is a complex component that moves power from the car’s engine to the wheels. In addition to regular maintenance, a transmission specialist performs repairs when a car transmission begins to slip, grind, or develop other issues.

Transmission specialists have advanced knowledge of the complicated components of manual, automatic, and continuously variable transmissions. Their specialized knowledge of gear trains, hydraulic pumps, couplings, and other transmission parts makes them qualified to diagnose and repair multiple transmission issues.

In addition to mechanical knowledge, a transmission specialist must have extensive knowledge of the computer controls and electronic systems that are integral components of transmissions. Some transmission specialists work with specific types of vehicles like buses or trucks, while others work primarily on older styles of transmissions.
